Once you are exposed to the planetary gearbox industry, you will often come across the specialized name of stages. What is the number of stages in a planetary gearhead?
Number of stages: the number of sets of planetary gears.
Since one set of planetary gears cannot satisfy a large transmission ratio, sometimes 2 or 3 sets are needed to satisfy the user’s requirement of a large transmission ratio. Due to the increase in the number of planetary gears, the length of a 2 or 3 stage reducer will increase and the efficiency will decrease.
Single-stage planetary gearhead: contains only one set of planetary gears. Ratio: Between 3:1 and 10:1.
Two-stage planetary gearhead: Contains two sets of planetary gears. Ratios: between 10:1 and 100:1.
Three-stage planetary gearheads: Contains three planetary gear sets. Ratios: 100:1 and above, for applications requiring very high torque output.
In short, the number of stages of a planetary reducer refers to the number of sets of gears to meet the user’s larger ratios, and the larger the number of stages, the higher the ratios, theoretically speaking.
